LETTER TO STUDENTS
Dear Students,
In accordance with the agreement between Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and the State University of New York at Buffalo, our dual degree program in Civil Engineering allows students to complete their first and third years at the ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering—one of the oldest and strongest academic institutions in our country—and their second and fourth years at the University at Buffalo. In this way, students gain knowledge of both Turkish and American engineering practices and are awarded Civil Engineering degrees from both universities.
The field of Civil Engineering primarily includes the construction of residential and commercial buildings, high-rise structures, dams and hydraulic structures, nuclear, thermal, and other types of power plants, highways, tunnels, railways and railway bridges, planning and construction of airports and seaports, drinking water and sewage systems, mass transportation infrastructure such as metro and light rail systems, underground and underwater tube crossings, soil investigation and ground improvement, as well as the study and production of construction materials used in all these structures, project planning, and feasibility studies.
If you are interested in any of these areas, we believe that choosing this program will provide you with dual degrees valid in both countries, giving you a competitive advantage in an increasingly globalized world.
The Department of Civil Engineering consists of seven main divisions: Structural Engineering, Building Materials, Construction Management, Mechanics, Hydraulics, Geotechnics, and Transportation. The department has a total student population of 1,810, including 1,057 undergraduate, 591 master’s, and 162 doctoral students. As of the spring semester of the 2003–2004 academic year, the department employs 93 faculty members (45 professors, 28 associate professors, and 20 assistant professors), 5 lecturers, and 58 research assistants, making it one of the strongest academic staffs in the country. Approximately 200 new students are admitted each year, and education is conducted in five parallel sections, enabling more effective learning in smaller classes.

In line with modern educational standards, classrooms have been renovated. Department laboratories are fully equipped to conduct all types of experiments related to Civil Engineering.
In recent years, the department has significantly increased its consultancy, research, and project services provided to both private and public organizations within the industry. These activities, carried out under the revolving fund system, not only enhance the practical experience of academic staff but also contribute significantly to the development and modernization of faculty laboratories.

ABOUT ITU–SUNY CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAM
The ITU–SUNY Civil Engineering Program is an innovative international joint undergraduate program based on a year-sharing model between Istanbul Technical University and the University at Buffalo (State University of New York). The program aims to train engineers in the field of Civil Engineering with a modern and global perspective.
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded both an Istanbul Technical University Civil Engineering Bachelor’s Degree and a University at Buffalo Civil Engineering Bachelor’s Degree.
The program quota is 35 students. For the 2025–2026 academic year, applicants must be ranked within the top 90,000 in the Numerical (Science) score type to be eligible. Candidates are strongly advised to check the official ÖSYM preference guide for quota and admission requirements.
Each academic year consists of two 14-week semesters (fall and spring). Students spend their first and second years at ITU’s Maslak Campus in Istanbul, and their third and fourth years at the University at Buffalo campus in Buffalo, New York, USA.
Throughout the four-year undergraduate education, students experience the academic and social cultures of both Istanbul Technical University and the University at Buffalo. Graduates gain strong international career opportunities in the highly demanding global civil engineering sector.
