ITU FACULTY OF NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND OCEAN ENGINEERING
The beginning of naval architecture education in Türkiye is closely connected to the history of Istanbul Technical University (ITU). It dates back to the Imperial Naval Engineering School (Mühendishâne-i Bahrî-i Hümâyûn), the country’s first major technical education institution, founded in 1773 by Sultan Mustafa III to address the technical shortcomings of the navy.
In 1883, the Hendese-i Mülkiye School was established in a part of the Mühendishane buildings in Halıcıoğlu with the aim of educating civil engineers and architects. After being renamed the Higher Engineering School in 1928, it was transferred to the Ministry of National Education in 1941 and renamed Istanbul Higher Engineering School (İYMO). In 1943, the Naval Construction Engineering branch was established within İYMO to advance the technical organization of shipbuilding activities.
With Law No. 4619 adopted in 1944, İYMO was transformed into Istanbul Technical University (ITU) consisting of four faculties, and the Mechanical Engineering Faculty was formed, including General Mechanical Engineering, Aircraft Engineering, and Naval Architecture branches.
As the naval architecture branch gradually reached faculty-level capacity in both research and education, the academic staff of the department applied for the establishment of a separate faculty. As a result, the creation of the Faculty of Naval Architecture was approved at the ITU Senate meeting on March 13, 1969, and the establishment process was completed on December 18, 1969. In 1979, the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Through the dual diploma program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering jointly conducted between our university and the University of Strathclyde, students complete their 1st and 2nd years at ITU and their 3rd and 4th years at the University of Strathclyde. Upon successful completion, students are entitled to receive two separate four-year bachelor’s degrees, one from ITU and one from the University of Strathclyde.
Students who complete their first two years at ITU must have a minimum GPA of 2.0/4.0 in order to continue their studies at Strathclyde.
The quota for Turkish Republic citizens admitted to the program is 25 students. Applicants will be placed through ÖSYM based on their YKS Quantitative scores. Candidates with a ranking within the top 150,000 in the YKS Quantitative score type will be eligible for placement in the program.
